A Survey on 119 Ambulance Service Via 24-hr SPECC


Abstract
To obtain basic data for the establishment of prehospital Emergency Medical Service System (EMS), seventy three emergency patients who had called 119 ambiance via 24-hr Seoul City Hall Poison and Emergency Control Center (24-hr SPECC) from December 1987 to February 1989 were analyzed by the review of emergency room (ER) records.
The findings obtained were as follows:
1. The frequent calling group were 4th and 5th decade and male. Among 73 patients, medical patients were 52, surgical patients were 20, and one was dental patients.
2. The mean transportation time from scene to emergency, room (ER) was 51.0 minute (¡¾58.2). And the mean distance between the scene and 119 fire salutation was 3.3 Km (¡¾1.7).
3. Out of 73 patients, 13 were hospitalized via ER 32 were discharged following emergency room care and their symptoms were relieved, 12 rejected physician¢¥s recommendation despite of the need for further treatments, 7 were transferred to other hospitals, and 7 were expired.
4. Most common causes of calling ambiance were unconsciousness, dyspnea, vomiting & diarrhea, CO intoxication.
5. The causes of death were cardiac and pulmonary problem and hypovolemic shock due to massive bleeding. These data suggested that basic and advanced life support be started from the scene and during the transportation.
6. Twenty four-hour SPECEs service was effective to screen the minor medical problem patients, and instead of referring them to ambulance service they provided them with necessary information¡¯s.
